Mumbai
Vidyoday is working with children at two regions in Maharashtra state, Mumbai and Kolhapur. The Mumbai Branch involves the following major activities
1. Vigyan Khel ghar
Vigyan Khel Ghar or the Science Play Home is the first project of Vidyoday. It is a community center in Bainganwadi, in the M-ward area of Mumbai. It is one of the most backward regions of the city with very poor living conditions and miserable state of health, education, sanitation, housing and other essentials of living.
Keeping Vidyoday’s core vision in mind, the center was established in September 2014 and enrolled around 20 children of 8 to 13 years of age from the community. The children came from poor economic backgrounds and had low levels of reading and writing skills as well even after seven to eight years of schooling. It was a tough challenge to work with this group of children in order to bring a holistic development among them. During the first one and a half year, we experimented with various activities and teaching methods especially by using activities of science toys and art and crafts.
Various activities are being conducted in this center. It is a place where we experiment on our model of project based learning to make it more structured and organized to implement in a school setting. Children are involved in activities such as making science based toys, art and craft, indoor games such as chess and carom, etc. They are also taught basics of English and Hindi language.
2. Kumud Vidya Mandir
In July, 2016 we have started our work first time in a school named Kumud Vidya Mandir, Govandi, Mumbai. We work based on a module prepared of science education as per the Maharashtra State Board curriculum of Std. 6th and 7th. Pre-school sessions on every Saturday are conducted with around 30 children from the school.
3. Collaboration with TANDA
TANDA (Towards Advocacy Networking and Developmental Action) is a Field Action Project of TISS which works for the Pardhi community with a vision of ‘creating self-reliant NT-DNT communities and the fulfillment of their fundamental rights’. One of their works is education of the children of this community and has centers at different places in Mankhurd and Navi Mumbai in their community. Children from std. 1st to 9th come to these centers and a teacher is employed in these centers.
Vidyoday has collaborated with TANDA in employing their model in these centers. Since the teacher are not well qualified and follow the traditional teaching methods, through this collaboration we can train their teachers in the activity based methods used in Vigyan Khel Ghar.
